SWANFALL 2015: Journey of a Lifetime

Winter's coming, and so are the swans!  Don't miss the opportunity to see and learn about these magnificent birds that are our winter neighbors. Each winter, many swans migrate from Canada and Alaska to spend the winter at Mason Neck State Park and Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge.  Here, protected and relatively undisturbed shallow stretches of river and marshes offer the swans mild weather and abundant food.

The celebration of the swans will be held at the Jammes House, a beautiful old home situated far back in the Mason Neck State Park forest, with sweeping views of the Potomac River.  Holiday decorations and refreshments will set the stage, and this year's Audubon Society presentation will tell the story of a year in the life of the swans.  We will start with a bonded pair of wintering swans at Mason Neck. We will follow their long spring migration to their northern home.  We'll watch as the swans claim and protect a territory, build their nest, incubate their eggs, and raise their young, all the while preparing the family for the long trip back to Mason Neck.  Our story will conclude with the journey back to Mason Neck, as the new youngsters struggle to make the long flight to their new winter home.

The celebration is free, and there will be no Park entrance fee for registrants attending the celebration.  Donations to support the Friends and Park activities are most welcome.

Space at the Jammes House is limited, so you will need reserved registrations. Please register here or email the Friends.
